Wise

The cheapest way to send money abroad. Multi-currency by default.

Wise, best for

  • International transfers at the interbank rate, transparent fee
  • Holding 50+ currencies in one account
  • Receiving USD/EUR/GBP/AUD payouts on local details

Weak for

  • Day-to-day spending in a single home currency
  • ATM withdrawals over 2/month free

Wise, used in anger

Wise is your best friend for international transfers and holding foreign cash, but don't try to use it as your everyday debit card.

When Wise Actually Wins for Nomads

Wise, formerly TransferWise, absolutely shines when you need to move money across borders or hold multiple currencies. Its killer feature is the interbank exchange rate on over 50 currencies. This means you get the real market rate, minus a small, transparent fee. Forget the 3-5% markups other banks slap on you. It’s also brilliant for receiving money. You can get local bank details for USD, EUR, GBP, and AUD, making it look like you have a local account in those countries. This saves on incoming wire fees and makes you look more legit when getting paid. For anyone juggling multiple currencies, like an EU-based dev paid in USD and needing to pay bills in EUR, Wise is a game-changer. The fee for spending abroad is just the transparent conversion fee, no extra percentage tacked on by the card issuer.

The Real Cost of Using Wise

That interbank rate sounds great, and it is, but there are costs to watch. The card itself has a $9 issue fee. ATM withdrawals are free up to two times per month, but after that, it's 1.75% plus around $1.50 per ATM. If you're pulling cash out frequently, especially outside of Europe, those fees add up fast. Wise also charges for incoming wires, typically $4 for USD wires. While they advertise no markups on weekends, be aware that the interbank rate itself can fluctuate, and if you're converting currency outside of a transaction, you're always paying that small percentage fee. Card replacement abroad can also take time and incur a fee, so don't lose it.

Who Wise is For (and Who Should Look Elsewhere)

This card is tailor-made for digital nomads who are primarily using it to send money internationally, hold multiple currencies, or get paid in foreign currencies. Think of the remote worker living in Mexico but earning USD from a US company. They can receive USD directly into their Wise account using local US details, then convert it to MXN at the interbank rate for spending or withdrawals. It’s also great for freelancers paying international contractors.

However, if you’re mostly spending in your home currency, say a UK-based nomad living in Portugal and paying for everything in EUR, Wise might not be your best day-to-day card. The ATM fees after the free allowance and potential small conversion fees on every transaction can make it more expensive than a card with no FX fees for single-currency spending. A US-based founder paying US contractors and only occasionally needing to send money abroad might find their existing US bank account or a premium travel card more cost-effective for their primary spending.

The Friction Points and Backup Plans

Onboarding can be a hurdle. Wise requires identity verification, and eligibility depends on your passport and residence. Some nationalities or residents of certain countries face more scrutiny. You might also encounter account freezes or limitations, especially if you suddenly start making large or unusual transactions. Customer support is primarily online and can be slow to respond to urgent issues.

For these reasons, it’s wise to have a backup card. A travel credit card with no foreign transaction fees, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Capital One Venture X, is a good complement for daily spending. They offer purchase protection and rewards that Wise doesn't. If your Wise card gets blocked or lost, you still have a way to pay for things.
