Who walks in visa-free (and who doesn't)

If you hold a passport from the EU, UK, US, Canada, or Australia, you're in luck. Azerbaijan grants you 30 days of visa-free entry. That's the easiest way in for most digital nomads. Other countries like Turkey, Georgia, and the UAE also get this 30-day visa-free perk.

For citizens of Pakistan, there's a 15-day visa on arrival available at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD). It’s a decent option if you're just popping in for a short visit, but it won't cut it for longer stays.

If your passport isn't on either of those lists, you'll likely need to apply for an eVisa or a traditional visa before you travel. The ASAN Visa portal is your friend here. It handles applications for citizens of over 50 countries that don't qualify for visa-free entry. Processing times are usually 3 business days, but it's wise to apply at least a week in advance. Some nationalities might still need to go through a consulate, so check the official ASAN Visa website for your specific country.

How long can you really stay?

That 30-day visa-free allowance sounds simple, but here's where people trip up. Your entry stamp dictates your maximum stay. Azerbaijan uses an exit control system. This means when you leave, they check your entry stamp and how many days you’ve used.

The crucial point: you get one entry per stamp. If you leave Azerbaijan and want to come back, even within your 30-day window, you'll need a new entry stamp and potentially a new visa if your initial allowance is used up. This catches a lot of people out who think they can hop over to Georgia for a weekend and return.

Overstaying is where it gets costly. While specific fines can vary and are subject to change, penalties typically involve a fine of AZN 100 to AZN 400 (roughly $60 to $240 USD) and potential deportation. For longer overstays, you could face a ban from re-entering Azerbaijan for up to five years. You're expected to register your stay if you're in the country for more than 10 working days, though most hotels handle this automatically. If you're staying in an Airbnb or private accommodation, you’ll need to sort it out yourself at a local branch of the State Migration Service.

Working remotely on a tourist stamp

Can you work remotely on a 30-day visa-free entry or a tourist eVisa? Officially, no. Azerbaijan's tourist visas are for tourism. Working remotely for a foreign company while on a tourist stamp exists in a legal grey area worldwide, and Azerbaijan is no different.

In practice, enforcement is lax. You're unlikely to be questioned about your laptop at immigration. The biggest risk comes if you were to, for some reason, have an extended interaction with authorities – perhaps related to an overstay, a traffic incident, or another issue. At that point, your activities could be scrutinized. For short stays, most remote workers don't encounter problems. If you plan on staying longer than your visa-free allowance or eVisa permits, you absolutely need to look into longer-term visa options or a formal work permit. Don't assume the grey area will always protect you.

What's new with Azerbaijan visas?

Azerbaijan has been making things easier for travellers. The big news was the rollout of the ASAN Visa system, which replaced the old visa-on-arrival process for many nationalities. This eVisa platform, launched in stages, significantly streamlined the application process. It means you can apply online and get your visa electronically, avoiding queues at the airport.

The eVisa is typically valid for 90 days with a 30-day maximum stay. The fee is usually around $20 USD. This system has been expanded to include more countries over the last couple of years, making it accessible to a much wider audience.
