Most passports need a visa before you arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Seriously, don't even think about showing up without one unless you're from a very short list of lucky countries. This isn't a place where you can wing it.

Who can skip the visa queue?

If you're from North America, Western Europe, Australia, or the UK, you absolutely need to get a visa in advance. The DR Congo embassy or consulate in your home country is your first stop. For everyone else, it’s usually visa-on-arrival or visa-required.

There's a small list of countries that get visa-on-arrival for 30 days. This includes people from:

If your passport isn't from one of those seven, you're in the visa-required camp. The application process itself can be a bit of a maze. How long can you stay and what are the penalties?

Standard tourist visas are usually for 30 days. Longer validity exists, but it's less common for first-time applicants and usually needs specific justification. The real kicker? You need to get an exit stamp from immigration when you leave. Without one, your next entry attempt might get complicated.

Overstaying is where things get expensive and fast. A daily fine accrues and the Direction Générale de Migration collects it before you're cleared to leave, so it lands at the airport rather than quietly in the post. More importantly, you could be detained, deported, or banned from re-entry. Don't risk it. If you need more time, you must apply for an extension before your current visa expires, usually at the immigration office in Kinshasa. This process itself isn't always smooth sailing and can involve its own set of fees and bureaucracy.

What’s new with DR Congo visas?

The DR Congo has been talking about an eVisa system for a while, and there have been some small rollouts, particularly for certain nationalities and specific entry points like Kinshasa's N'djili Airport. This system is aimed at simplifying the process, but it's still very much in its infancy. As of late 2023/early 2024, it's not universally available for all passport holders or all entry points.

Fees have also seen some movement, and they're not uniform: the same tourist visa is priced differently by nationality and by the mission handling it, with longer validity and multiple entry costing more than a single-entry stay. Ask the specific consulate you'll be applying through for its current fee structure.
