Who Gets In (And How)

Most nationalities absolutely need a visa before arrival. This includes citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and the EU. Forget about visa-on-arrival schemes; Eritrea isn't playing that game. You'll be applying through an Eritrean embassy or consulate in your home country or a nearby one. The process can be slow, and requirements can vary slightly, so check with the specific embassy well in advance.

There are a few exceptions, primarily for neighbouring African countries. Citizens of Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, and Uganda can sometimes get a visa on arrival for short stays, typically 30 days. This isn't guaranteed, and border officials have the final say. Even if you're from one of these countries, it’s wise to confirm the current policy before you travel. Never assume.

How Long Can You Stay? (And What Happens If You Don't Leave)

Tourist visas are generally issued for 30 days, and you'll typically get a single entry. This means once you leave, that visa is done. If you plan on a longer trip or need to pop out and back, you’ll need to apply for a multiple-entry visa beforehand, which is rare and usually reserved for business or diplomatic purposes.

The real kicker? Exit stamps. You must get an exit stamp from immigration at your point of departure. Without it, you can face serious problems. Overstaying is even worse. A fine accrues and must be settled with immigration before you are cleared to leave, and in a country this tightly administered that process can mean detention rather than a counter and a receipt. Treat even a few days over as a serious problem, not an admin fee. Get your extensions sorted well before your visa expires. Extensions are possible but require paperwork and time at the immigration office in Asmara.

What's New on the Visa Front?

Eritrea has been slow to adopt modern visa processes. For the longest time, it was strictly embassy applications. There has been limited movement towards an eVisa system for certain nationalities, primarily for tourism. This is still in its infancy and not widely available. Don't bank on it unless you find a confirmed, official portal and can process your application through it.

Fee structures also tend to shift without much public announcement, and the amount depends on the embassy and the duration you apply for, so ask the mission handling your file what it currently charges. The 30-day duration remains the standard for tourist visas. There haven't been major policy shifts in the last 12-18 months regarding core visa requirements for Western nationals, meaning the need for pre-approval and embassy applications remains the norm.
