Who Walks In Visa-Free?

Eswatini’s visa policy is surprisingly straightforward if you're from most developed countries. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most EU countries get a 30-day visa-free stay on arrival. That’s the big one. You just get stamped in. No fuss, no forms at the airport.

Then there’s a second tier. Citizens of countries like China, India, Russia, and many African nations typically need to apply for a visa in advance. You can sometimes get a visa on arrival, but don't count on it. It’s a bit of a gamble and depends heavily on the immigration officer you get. Always check with the Eswatini embassy or consulate in your current country well before you plan to travel if you're not in the first group. It’s better to have the visa sorted beforehand than to be stuck at the border.

Finally, a few nationalities absolutely need a pre-arranged visa. This list is shorter and includes countries like Pakistan and Nigeria. Again, the best bet is to contact an Eswatini diplomatic mission. Trying to wing it with these passports is a recipe for disappointment.

How Long Can You Actually Stay?

That 30-day visa-free stamp is pretty firm for the first group. What’s less clear is extending it. Officially, you can apply for an extension at the Ministry of Home Affairs in Mbabane or Manzini. They can grant extensions, often for another 30 days, but it's not guaranteed. You’ll need proof of funds and a valid reason.

Here’s a gotcha: make sure you get an exit stamp when you leave. Some people have reported issues on re-entry because they didn't have proof of departure. While Eswatini is generally a single-entry country on arrival stamps, extensions are sometimes treated as double-entry if you leave and come back within the extended period. This is confusing, I know. Just aim to stay put once you're in.

Overstaying? Bad idea. A fine accrues per day and gets settled before you're allowed to leave, at the rate the Ministry of Home Affairs sets. But the real penalty is being declared a prohibited immigrant and denied re-entry for a period, which no amount of cash undoes. It's not worth the risk for a few extra days.

What's New with Eswatini Visas?

Eswatini has been slowly digitizing its processes. There was talk about an eVisa system rolling out, particularly for those who need a visa in advance. However, it’s not widely implemented or user-friendly. Most people requiring a visa still need to go through embassies. Keep an eye on the official Eswatini government immigration website, but don’t rely on it yet.

Fee structures can also shift. Both the visa-on-arrival fee and the extension fee are set in lilangeni, the extension being the cheaper of the two, and the current amounts are the Ministry of Home Affairs' to publish. Confirm them locally rather than budgeting off a figure you read somewhere. There haven’t been any massive policy overhauls in the last 12-18 months, mostly minor tweaks and ongoing digitization efforts.
