Expect to pay around 10 EUR per day for overstaying, and in some cases, detention is a real possibility until the fine is settled. Always ensure your visa is valid for your intended departure date. Getting an exit stamp from immigration is mandatory; don't forget this final step.

Working Remotely on a Tourist Stamp? It's Tricky.

Mauritania doesn't have a digital nomad visa. This means working remotely while in the country on a tourist visa is technically not permitted. However, the reality on the ground is often less strict than the written rules. Most border officials and police are more concerned with your visa status and entry/exit compliance than what you do with your laptop in a café.

That said, it’s a grey area. If you draw attention to yourself or are involved in any situation requiring official scrutiny, your remote work could be flagged. There isn't a specific "digital nomad police force" cracking down on laptop workers. Still, it's wise to keep a low profile. Avoid discussing your work arrangements with authorities and focus on maintaining your legal entry status. It's a calculated risk, like many things when travelling in this region.

For a long time, Mauritania operated with a fairly static visa policy. However, in the past year or so, there have been some shifts. The most significant development was the planned rollout of an eVisa system. While not fully implemented or universally accessible for all nationalities as of late 2023, this is a positive step towards simplifying the application process. Fee structures can also fluctuate. The 55 EUR figure for the airport visa is the most commonly cited, but it's always prudent to have a little extra cash on hand.
