How Long Can You Actually Stay?

That 30-day allowance is the baseline. Extending it is possible, but it’s not automatic and often requires proving you have sufficient funds and a booked onward ticket. Visitors typically apply for an extension at the Immigration office in Apia. Extensions are usually granted for another 30 days, bringing your potential tourist stay to a maximum of 60 days.

The real gotcha? Overstaying. Penalties are steep. While exact fines can vary, expect to pay a daily fine for every day you’re in the country past your visa expiry. More seriously, you could face deportation and a ban from re-entering Samoa for several years. Always ensure your passport has an exit stamp from your last point of departure before Samoa and an entry stamp upon arrival. Double-check these.

Working Remotely on a Tourist Stamp

Here’s where it gets murky. Officially, working on a tourist visa is prohibited. You’re supposed to be there for leisure. However, Samoa isn't actively hunting down remote workers on tourist stamps. The focus is generally on those trying to work for a local employer without proper authorisation.

Many digital nomads use their tourist visa for short stays, working from cafes in Apia or their resort. The authorities aren't typically checking IP addresses or scrutinising your laptop. If you plan a longer stay, however, or if your work is very visible (e.g., constantly on video calls in public), you might attract attention. For extended periods, you'd technically need a specific work permit or a different visa category, which doesn't currently exist for remote workers in Samoa. It's a calculated risk for shorter trips.
