Most Western passports need a visa for Uganda. You can get this online or on arrival, but most people skip the eVisa and save hassle.

Who Walks in Visa-Free (Spoiler: Not Many)

For Uganda, your passport is your ticket. US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian citizens will need a visa. The same goes for passport holders from many other countries. You can apply for an eVisa online through the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control website. The standard tourist visa is $50 USD for 90 days. Alternatively, you can get a visa on arrival at Entebbe International Airport. This is often faster and simpler than the eVisa process, which can sometimes get stuck in processing limbo.

A select group of nationalities get visa-free entry for 90 days. This includes citizens of East African Community member states like Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Sudan. There are also specific bilateral agreements granting visa-free access to citizens of some other African nations. If you're unsure, always check the latest list on the Ugandan immigration website before you fly. Don't assume you're exempt.

Length of Stay and the Exit Stamp Trap

The standard tourist visa for Uganda is usually valid for 90 days. This period starts from your date of entry, not from when you receive the visa. What catches people out is the exit stamp requirement. When you leave Uganda, ensure you get an official exit stamp in your passport. Without this, your next visa application might be questioned, or you could face issues if you try to re-enter later.

Overstaying your visa is where things get expensive. The penalty is typically $100 USD per day for each day you overstay. While not everyone gets caught, the authorities are cracking down. A 90-day visa means you have 90 days. If your plans change and you need more time, you must apply for an extension before your current visa expires. Extensions are possible but add another layer of bureaucracy and cost.

Can You Work Remotely on a Tourist Stamp?

Officially, working on a tourist visa in Uganda is a grey area. The visa is for tourism, not for employment or business. However, enforcement is often lax, especially for digital nomads simply working on their laptops in cafes or co-working spaces. Most authorities aren't actively checking if you're typing emails or attending Zoom calls. The real issue arises if you're trying to conduct local business, solicit clients within Uganda, or engage in activities that clearly constitute employment.

The key is to avoid drawing attention. If you're a remote worker whose income is entirely from outside Uganda and you're not interacting with the local economy in a business capacity, you're generally fine. Don't set up a permanent desk in a public space and expect no one to notice. Stick to cafes, co-working spaces, or your accommodation. The risk is low, but technically, you're not supposed to work.

What's New with Ugandan Visas

Uganda rolled out an eVisa system in late 2021. This was meant to streamline the application process, allowing you to apply and pay online before arrival. While it's functional, many travellers still prefer the visa-on-arrival option for its perceived simplicity and speed. The eVisa portal can sometimes be slow, and applicants have reported needing to follow up on their applications.

There haven't been major policy shifts in the last 12-18 months regarding visa types or general entry requirements for tourists. The standard $50 tourist visa for 90 days remains the norm for most nationalities. However, immigration policies can change quickly. Always verify the latest requirements directly with the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control or the nearest Ugandan embassy before your trip.
