Bunq, used in anger
Bunq is a solid option if you need a European bank account and want to split bills with friends.
Where Bunq Actually Shines
Bunq’s real strength lies in its slick sub-accounts and budgeting tools, especially if you're already within the EU. You can create up to 30 different sub-accounts, each with its own IBAN. This is fantastic for separating travel funds, business expenses, or even just savings goals. For couples or small groups travelling together, the 'Party' feature lets up to four people contribute to a shared pot, making expense tracking painless. The FX model is also a winner: interbank FX on 50 currencies means you get rates very close to the real market rate, a significant saving compared to banks that slap on a 2-3% markup. It's a serious perk for frequent travellers within the EU/EEA.
The True Cost of Doing Business with Bunq
Let's talk money. The headline monthly fee is $3, but that's for the Easy Bank plan. For the features most nomads want, like sub-accounts and better FX, you're looking at the Easy Money plan at $9/month†. That interbank FX rate sounds great, but remember it's on top of your monthly plan fee. ATM withdrawals are a bit of a maze. You get unlimited free ATM withdrawals within the EU, which is generous. Outside the EU, or if you're just using it for general spending and want to avoid the monthly fee, be mindful of the $1.20 per withdrawal fee after a free tier†. Incoming SEPA transfers are free, but international wire transfers can incur fees, and card replacement abroad isn't cheap. They also charge for physical card replacements, typically $11 per card.
Who Should Be Signing Up vs. Who Should Look Elsewhere
Bunq is ideal for the digital nomad who is already based in or frequently travels within the EU/EEA and needs a no-fuss way to manage multiple income streams or shared expenses. Think of a remote software developer paid in Euros, living in Portugal, who wants to keep their freelance income separate from their personal spending and easily split rent with a partner. They benefit directly from the multiple IBANs and the interbank FX rates for any incidental travel outside the Eurozone.
However, if you're a digital nomad primarily operating outside the EU, earning in USD, and paying contractors globally, Bunq probably isn't your primary banking solution. The $9 monthly fee for the relevant plan adds up, and while the FX is good, you'll still be subject to international transfer fees for sending money outside the SEPA zone. Also, if your main goal is just a free, basic bank account for occasional use, the paid tier is a non-starter.
The Bumps in the Road
Getting set up with Bunq can be a hurdle. Eligibility requires you to have an EU/EEA address and often an EU phone number, which immediately locks out many nomads. While they use passport verification, the residence requirement is key. There have been anecdotal reports of accounts being frozen unexpectedly, especially if large, irregular international transfers are detected, causing significant travel disruption. Customer support is primarily app-based, and while often responsive, it lacks the personal touch of a dedicated bank manager, which can be frustrating when dealing with account issues abroad. For a backup, consider a Wise or Revolut account. They offer broader international reach and often lower fees for non-EU transactions, serving as a good counterpoint to Bunq’s EU-centric strengths.
