Most nationalities get 90 days visa-free in Guatemala. US, EU, UK, Canada, and Australia passports get this automatic entry. A few countries need pre-approval. Everyone else? You're probably fine for 90 days too, but check the official list.
Who Walks In Visa-Free (and Who Doesn't)
If you're from the US, Canada, the UK, or most EU countries, you're golden. Guatemala grants you 90 days on arrival, no questions asked. Same deal for Australia and New Zealand. This is usually stamped right into your passport at immigration. It's a straightforward process for the vast majority of digital nomads.
There's a small group of countries that do require a visa in advance. Think countries like India, China, and some African nations. If your passport falls into this category, you’ll need to apply through a Guatemalan embassy or consulate before you travel. Don't show up expecting to get one at the airport. The official list of visa-required nationalities is on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. It’s worth a quick check even if you think you're covered.
How Long Can You Actually Stay?
That initial 90-day stamp is the standard. But here's where it gets tricky. You can often extend this for another 90 days, and then potentially a third 90 days, for a maximum of 270 days per year. This requires a visit to the Dirección General de Migración (DGM) in Guatemala City or a regional office. You'll need to fill out forms, pay a fee (around Q100 per extension), and present your passport.
Don't assume you can just overstay and pay a fine. While minor overstays might result in a small fee (often around Q20 per day) upon departure, pushing your luck can lead to deportation, fines, or being banned from re-entry. Also, be aware of exit requirements. You need an exit stamp in your passport. Some people have reported issues leaving without one, even if they entered legally. Keep track of your entry date and when your allowed stay expires.
Working Remotely on a Tourist Stamp
This is the big grey area for digital nomads. Officially, working remotely on a tourist visa isn't permitted. You're entering as a tourist, not an employee or resident. However, enforcement is… inconsistent. Most remote workers operate on their tourist stamp without issue. Immigration officers are generally more concerned with your intended length of stay and proof of onward travel than what you do on your laptop in a café.
The reality is that Guatemala isn't actively policing remote workers on tourist visas. You're unlikely to be questioned about your laptop use. The risk is low, but it's not zero. If you plan on staying long-term, or if you're doing something that could be construed as local employment, you might attract unwanted attention. For most short-to-medium term stays, simply working online is unlikely to cause problems.
What's New in Guatemalan Immigration?
Guatemala has been slow to adopt digital immigration processes, but changes are happening. In late 2022, they introduced an eVisa system for certain nationalities, primarily for tourism and business. However, its rollout has been gradual, and it doesn't yet cover the majority of countries that previously received visa-free entry. Most visitors from North America, Europe, and Australia will still rely on the standard 90-day visa exemption stamp.
The fees for extensions and other immigration services can fluctuate. Always check the Dirección General de Migración website or contact them directly for the most current information regarding prices and procedures. There haven't been any major suspensions or expansions of visa-free travel in the last 18 months, but the eVisa development is worth monitoring if you're from a country that might be added to its scope.
