Nearly every nationality gets a Nepali visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or a land border. You choose the length when you pay: 15 days for $30, 30 days for $50, or 90 days for $125, per the Department of Immigration fee schedule. Indian citizens need no visa at all.

Who gets the on-arrival stamp and who applies ahead

Citizens of the US, EU countries, the UK, Canada, Australia and most other countries qualify for the visa on arrival: valid passport, a form (or the online pre-arrival application), and the fee in cash or card. A short list of nationalities is excluded from on-arrival issuance and must apply at a Nepalese embassy or consulate first; if your passport is from an excluded country you will already know the drill, but the authoritative list lives on immigration.gov.np, so check there rather than a blog before booking.

How long you can stay, and what an overstay actually costs

Tourist visas are extendable at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or Pokhara at $3 per day with a 15-day minimum, up to a ceiling of 150 days total per calendar year. Overstaying means paying the extension fee for the missed days plus a $5-per-day late fine before you are allowed to exit, so an overstay runs about $8 per day all-in (fee schedule: immigration.gov.np). Push past the 150-day ceiling and it stops being arithmetic: the Director General can levy a larger fine and order deportation or blacklisting. Immigration checks the dates at the exit desk, so settle any overstay at the department before your flight, not at the airport counter.

What's new with Nepalese visas

Nepal now runs an eTA-style online visa application through the Nepaliport portal, which lets you submit details and pay before you fly instead of queueing at the arrival kiosks. The paper form at the airport still works. Fees above are the current official schedule; Nepal revises them occasionally, so treat the official fee page as the source of record, and note that a $25 multi re-entry add-on exists if you plan side trips to India or China within your visa period.

Working remotely on a tourist entry? The legal shape of that question is the same in nearly every country, so we answer it once, properly.

The visa policy of Nepal allows citizens of most countries to obtain either an Online tourist visa or a visa on arrival while citizens of India are allowed freedom of movement. However, citizens of certain other countries must obtain a visa from one of the Nepalese diplomatic missions.
