Who Gets In Visa-Free (and Who Doesn't)

For passport holders from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most EU countries, Sri Lanka offers a 30-day visa exemption upon arrival. That's the good news. You usually get a stamp in your passport, and you're good to go for a month. This is great for a quick visit or scouting trip.

However, not everyone gets this perk. Citizens of countries like India, Pakistan, China, and many African nations are typically required to apply for an eVisa before arriving. You can do this online through the official Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration website. It's a straightforward process, but missing it means you might face delays or even be denied entry. Some other countries fall into a middle ground, where visa-on-arrival is an option but not automatic. Always check the latest list on the official immigration site if your passport isn't from a major Western nation.

How Long Can You Really Stay?

That initial 30-day visa-free period for eligible nationalities is just the start. You can extend your stay for up to 90 days in total, but this requires a visit to the Visa Extension Unit of the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo. You'll need proof of sufficient funds and a return or onward ticket. There are fees for extensions, and they can add up. Don't plan on just winging it; book an appointment and be prepared.

Watch out for exit requirements. While less common now, some nationalities might have had specific exit stamp rules in the past. The biggest gotcha, though, is overstaying. Penalties are steep. For a short overstay, say a few days, you'll likely face a fine of around LKR 500 to LKR 1,000 per day†. Overstaying for longer periods can lead to much higher fines, deportation, and a ban from re-entering Sri Lanka for several years. It's not worth the risk.

Working Remotely on a Tourist Stamp

This is where things get murky. Technically, working remotely on a standard tourist visa or visa-free entry for Sri Lanka is a grey area. You're not supposed to engage in any form of employment while on a tourist stamp. However, enforcement is, shall we say, inconsistent. Most digital nomads I know work from cafes, co-working spaces, and their Airbnbs without issue. The authorities are generally more concerned with people trying to find local employment.

The key is not to draw attention. Don't set up a business registration, don't advertise local services, and don't try to work for Sri Lankan companies directly. As long as your income is coming from abroad and you're not actively seeking local work, you're probably fine. Sri Lanka is aiming to introduce a specific digital nomad visa, which will eventually clarify this situation. Until then, keep a low profile.

What's New on the Visa Front?

Sri Lanka recently revamped its entire visa system, moving towards a more streamlined eVisa process for many nationalities. The Online Visa Application (OVA) portal is now the primary gateway for most pre-arrival visa applications. Fees have also seen adjustments. For instance, many common eVisa types now cost around USD 50 for a 30-day stay, though prices can fluctuate based on nationality and duration.

There was a significant change in late 2023 when Sri Lanka introduced a new electronic travel authorisation (ETA) system. This replaced some older visa types and consolidated application processes. They've also expanded the list of countries eligible for eVisa applications, making it easier for a wider range of travellers to plan their trips.
