Who Gets In Visa-Free and Who Doesn't

For many, Sri Lanka is a breeze. Citizens of the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore can typically get a 30-day visa on arrival, no pre-application needed. Just have your passport ready, maybe a return ticket, and hope they don't ask for proof of funds. It's a straightforward process, usually.

Then there's the eVisa route. If your passport isn't on that initial list of visa-exempt countries, you'll almost certainly need to apply for an eVisa online before you travel. This covers a huge chunk of the world's nationalities. The application is online, usually processed within a few days, and grants you entry for a specific period, often 30 days as well. Don't show up expecting to sort it at the airport; that’s a fast track to disappointment. Finally, a few nationalities are outright banned from visa-free entry and must apply through a Sri Lankan embassy, which is a whole other level of paperwork.

How Long Can You Actually Stay?

That initial 30-day visa, whether on arrival or eVisa, is usually extendable. You can apply for extensions at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo. Most people can get up to a 90-day stay in total. Be warned: the rules around exit stamps and re-entry can be tricky. If you leave and try to come back too quickly, you might hit a snag. It's best to have your full planned duration sorted before you depart. Overstaying is where things get expensive fast. Penalties can include fines of USD 50 to USD 200 and, more crucially, a potential ban on re-entry for several years. Don't mess with this.

Working Remotely on a Tourist Stamp

This is the grey area everyone asks about. Technically, working remotely on a tourist visa is not permitted. Sri Lanka, like many countries, wants you to get a specific work or business visa if you intend to earn money while there. However, enforcement on digital nomads simply using Wi-Fi to do their jobs is, shall we say, inconsistent. You won't see immigration officers raiding co-working spaces. The real risk comes if you're trying to conduct business locally or if you attract unwanted attention for some other reason. For most, as long as you're discreet and not advertising your remote work setup, you'll likely be fine. Just don't try to register a local company or solicit clients on the island.

What's New with Sri Lankan Visas?

Sri Lanka has been trying to streamline its visa process. The big news in the last 18 months has been the further rollout and refinement of the eVisa system. They've also adjusted fees periodically. For instance, there were significant fee increases for certain visa types announced in late 2023. Some nationalities that previously had visa-on-arrival access might now be directed to the eVisa portal. It's essential to check the official Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration website just before your trip, as these policies can shift. They've also been experimenting with different entry durations and pricing structures for tourist visas, so what applied six months ago might not be the case today.
